Emad Barsoum: In The Time of Inclusion and Diversity ( 2 )
Why the society, when it drifts from the truth, it tends to hate those who speak it! It is a fact that was thought about by the very renowned English novelist, journalist, and critic, George Orwell.
If we try to expose the weaknesses in our society the majority would rush to hide their heads in the sand, others will declare war against those who speak the truth, simply because truth mostly hurts. Ignoring reality or conceal it will eventually lead to the inner destruction of society, no matter how long it takes but it is an inevitable future.
Creating a society based on equality, inclusion, diversity, and acceptance of the other is almost an impossible status. A status that defies human nature and its complexity, its prejudice and partiality, and above all the deeply rooted ideologies and doctrines. If we take a basic example and compare how two groups of people from the same land, of the same race and speaking the same language, but one group from the northern region and the other from the southern one, we will immediately realize the amount of discrimination between both when someone from the first group would get into a minor conflict with a person from the second. Same as in a Football match (soccer), where teams from two different regions within the same city are playing together in a tournament, we have witnessed how on some occasions the game ends in violence and physical injuries just because one of the teams lost, although it is the nature of the sport, it is against the nature of human beings.
Certainly, the level of tolerance and acceptance between people from different neighborhoods, cities, cultures, or nations is related to the degree of education and knowledge as well as the level of civility and progressiveness, nevertheless, the ongoing fact of bias and preconception is widespread and cannot be negated.
Then what would be the role of the governments or regimes to guarantee as much as possible the social peace, tolerance, and acceptance within vast and widely diversified races, languages, religions, and cultures, which is known in the modern days as inclusion and diversity!
There is not much that could be done once the governments or regimes are themselves biased or partial. Acceptance, inclusion, and diversity are total and whole requirements for a healthy and productive society, it is the way for any system to progress and survive the economic, social, and environmental challenges.
If the system cannot absorb all differences and create one unified identity of a nation, then there will be no Nation. If diversified groups of people cannot comply with or adhere to the laws and regulations of the place, then the system has failed. When double standards are realized in official announcements when governments take sides in social disagreements, or when evident preference is manifested in trying to pass Bills or Laws favoriting certain groups among others then we can stridently announce the death of civilization, modernity, equality, and Democracy.
